KBW was established as 11 King's Bench Walk, Temple in 1954 by George Waller QC, who subsequently became leader of the North Eastern Circuit, a High Court Judge, and finally a Lord Justice of Appeal.

There have been a number of distinguished Heads of Chambers: John Cobb QC, who later became Mr Justice Cobb; David Savill QC, who later became the Recorder of Leeds; and from 1984 to 2006 Franz Muller QC. Andrew Robertson QC, who has recently been elected as Head of Chambers, has many illustrious predecessors.

In 1982 the decision was taken to open an annex in Park Square, Leeds to offer consultation and conference facilities locally. This has proved to be a great success. In 2004 a thorough review of our services to professional clients on Circuit led us to take the difficult but necessary and progressive step of leaving London and concentrating on Circuit. At the moment we are still based in Park Square but will shortly open “state of the art” Chambers in the new Round Foundry development.

For the past four decades we have provided the High Court Bench and the Circuit Bench with several distinguished judges. The former Lord Chief Justice of England, Lord Taylor of Gosforth and the Vice-President of the Queen's Bench Division, the Rt Hon Lord Justice Kennedy were popular members of Chambers. In addition to David Savill QC, the Recorder of Leeds, Judge Angus Stroyan QC, the Recorder of Newcastle,  came from 11 King's Bench Walk, as did Judge Geoffrey Baker QC, Judge Donald Herrod QC, and His Honour Peter Mason QC, who now sits as an arbitrator. More recently William Crawford QC, Robert Moore, Guy Whitburn QC, James Spencer QC, and Roger Thorn QC have all been appointed circuit judges.
