Mr Cleasby has substantial experience in both defending and prosecuting the full spectrum of criminal offences. He is regularly instructed to defend in offences of murder, manslaughter, rape, historic allegations of child abuse, serious offences of violence and drug conspiracies.
 

Recent cases:

Junior in a manslaughter case wherein it is alleged that parents have deliberately given significant doses of methadone and other narcotics to a two year old child.

Defended in a large scale drug conspiracy which involved Vietnamese gangs smuggling in immigrants and setting up colossal cannabis factories in the north east of England.

Defended in a case of aggravated burglary wherein a jealous lover broke into his ex partners house in the dead of night armed with a wooden stave. He struck the new partner across the head whilst he was sleeping causing significant brain injury.

Defended in a further case of aggravated burglary which involved youths attacking a wheelchair bound man suffering from cerebral palsy. The attack included burning with cigarettes, spraying him with a noxious substance and smearing him with excrement.

Defended an inter-marital rape. A Sikh lady who had suffered years of domestic abuse and violence discovered her husband having an affair, she instigated divorce proceedings which brought shame upon the husband who then proceeded to rape her as punishment.

Defended in an alleged rape upon a 16 year old girl by 42 year old neighbour. It was alleged that he had dragged her into the house up the stairs and raped her upon his bed.

Junior in a murder case wherein a farmer's wife stabbed her husband 27 times in front of her 8 year old daughter. She had not been the subject of any actual domestic violence but had endured years of taunting and degrading treatment leading her to suffer from a depressive illness. The jury acquitted her of murder.

Junior in a murder case wherein an amphetamine addict broke into his dealer's house in the early hours of the morning murdering a teenage girl sleeping on the sofa.

Defended in a firearms case which involved a Jamaican, suspected of crack cocaine dealing shooting at members of an Asian gang in a turf war. He was arrested by the armed response unit and the case turned on the possibility of gun shot residue being transferred from these officers to the suspect.

Junior in a murder case involving the death of a young prostitute. The defendant was alleged to have strangled her to death during the sexual encounter.
