Areas of practice

Crime: Defence and prosecution work at all levels. Notable cases include:
 

  • Being the led junior in the prosecution of what was described by the sentencing judge (the Recorder of York) as the worst case of historic child sex abuse he had ever known. The final indictment covered 47 counts, 20 complainants and a 35 year period, and resulted in a sentence of 20 years imprisonment.

  • Successfully prosecuting a five-day trial involving the possession with intent to supply of 1.5kg of cannabis and cannabis resin, with expert witnesses called on both sides.

  • The successful prosecution of a defendant for a domestic burglary involving violence against a couple aged 90 and 91.

  • A successful appeal to the Crown Court on behalf of a fifteen year old boy of previous good character against a conviction for robbery in the youth court.

  • Persuading a magistrates’ court to grant bail to a defendant charged with making threats to kill whilst already on bail for murder.

  • Obtaining permission to apply for judicial review of a youth court's decision to adjourn a trial without good reason (R v Camberwell Youth Court ex parte W (2004) EWHC (Admin)2211.)

  • Currently conducting the first prosecution in the country of an offence contrary to section 128 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 (trespass on a designated site).

Civil: General personal injury work and also civil applications by the police, including:

  • Fast track trials and small claims hearings for both claimants and defendants.

  • Infant settlement hearings.

  • Applications for football banning orders.

  • Applications for forfeiture of criminal property under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

  • Applications for anti-social behaviour orders.

Family: Residence and contact proceedings, domestic violence injunctions.
